Niños del Barrio

Niños del Barrio (Neighborhood Children) is a photo series meant to challenge how we view traditional Chicano culture in the Latin community.

I styled young Latin people in classic oversized Chicano and Norteño (traditional Mexican) outfits—looks from a subculture that are often hidden or frowned upon by both American and Mexican standards.

In Mexican culture, these styles are dismissed as something only those without money or prestige wear. In American culture, people often see someone in a big hat, belt buckle, and baggy jeans and assume the person is illegal.
