SUITS is a take on playing cards used in the game of Spades, exploring how the stories and traditions shared through the game influence Black heritage.

Spades is a ritual in Black American culture, often played at family gatherings—cookouts and reunions—cementing it as a tradition that binds the community. I never learned to play because I was always too young to sit at the card table. By the time I was old enough, the moment had passed.

This series reimagines the cards in a suit, interpreting the game's rules and terms as I understand them. This project explores how the traditions we pass down shape cultural heritage, and how the absence of shared knowledge allow new paths to form within the community.
